My entire BoY watch was me shipping Xiao Se and Wu Xin and vowing never to believe a word Gu Yun (SPL) said about bald donkeys because wow Liu Xueyi showed the way for all the monks in danmei.
Why You Should Watch 少年歌行 | The Blood of Youth
Tumblr media
TLDR: Super good, you should absolutely watch this! Not at all a BL/danmei but from what the donghua gave, there’s quite a healthy bit of bromance and brotherhood between the two male leads, and this show has comedy, plot, excellent pacing, exciting wugong moves and conspiracy, plus tons of gorgeous women and men who can all fight!!! CGI is great too, I initially thought this was gonna be a trashy but funny and moderately good wuxia drama but it’s really well-made and it is still funny and really good on all fronts.
*It has a donghua but I haven’t watched it!!!
Summary:
Xiao Se is a handsome but relatively poor inn owner in the middle of nowhere on some snowtop mountain, and said inn barely sees any visitors year after year. Just as Xiao Se is deciding whether or not to sell the inn, they finally get one visitor, a young traveler, Lei Wujie who’s traversing jianghu for the very first time on his own, and then they soon get a bunch of hooligans who want to rob the inn. Lei Wujie ‘saves’ Xiao Se by defeating the hooligans but in the process damage the inn; Xiao Se demands payment and Lei Wujie says he needs to get to Xue Yue City to find money to pay him back essentially, so Xiao Se follows him out of his inn in the mountains on a journey.
Along the way, they stumble upon Tang Lian, a skilled and well-known disciple of a famous shifu from Xue Yue City, who’s guarding and escorting a golden coffin to another city, not knowing what is in the coffin. He’s been hunted down repeatedly and ambushed by multiple groups of skilled experts, all coveting what’s inside the golden coffin. Xiao Se and Lei Wujie get accidentally embroiled in the mess, and then realize along the way that a monk - Wu Xin - is in the coffin. And everyone is after Wu Xin, from the demonic sects to other sects in the pugilistic world, all the way to the royal palace.
As Xiao Se and Lei Wujie end up traveling with Wu Xin, conspiracies and past feuds unravel, and Xiao Se is not who he seems to be.
Watch on Youku (YT): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1xIuBPN-lk (Total 39 episodes, from Dec. 2022 - Jan. 2023)
Main Characters:
Tumblr media
Xiao Se/Xiao Chuhe (Li Hongyi): The exiled 6th prince who was once a prodigy in martial arts and cultivation before he lost all of it after an attack, and he’s been at the inn ever since. Very well informed of everyone and who’s who, plus all the big happenings in the pugilistic world. Nonchalant, dealing with some issues, very bold and haughty (rightfully so), and this man was a prince and skilled fighter from before too, HAS A LOT OF BAGGAGE, banters a lot with Lei Wujie (cuz this boy is dumb) and is forced to face his demons with the help of Wu Xin. Mysterious, but not really because the moment he walks out everyone knows him like come on he’s the beloved 6th prince before he was exiled
Tumblr media
Wu Xin (Liu Xueyi): The son of the demonic sect head before his dad went to war with the royals and was betrayed and defeated, and the demonic sect had to send him over to the royal palace as a hostage, but he gets ‘adopted’ by an old monk and is taught everything that he knows (and was loved) by the old monk. He looks very demonic LMAO more than a monk, super skilled, known for his magic eyes, and he kidnaps Xiao Se and Lei Wujie to be his companions, has a bit of daddy issues too and a lot of pent up anger from when he was younger, but also like super zen at times, and then flippant at other times
Tumblr media
Lei Wujie: Dumb husky or golden retriever. Very skilled, pure-hearted, but still very young. SO DAMN FUNNY!!!
Why You Should Watch This:
1. Possible bromance between Wu Xin and Xiao Se - So far they’ve been very brotherhood but I expect that all to change soon, their first meeting is hilarious af this is the first thing they say to each other, when Wu Xin asked if Xiao Se would accompany him to place and bro went “No wtf”
Tumblr media
I mean look at how demonic and slutty Wu Xin is with his eyes and that jawline and see how close they sitting to each other even though Xiao Se is like get-away-from-me
Tumblr media
GUYS WE REALY DO GET BROMANCE!!! HAHAHAHA also i was wrong xiao se at this point isn’t the 团宠 just yet, wu xin is!!! he’s the center of attention do you know how many people ran to catch him when he fainted?!?!??!
Tumblr media
AND THEY WERE FORCED TO BE SEPARATED FOR A BIT AND LOOK AT HOW THEY TEARED UP WHEN THEY WERE BACK FACING EACH OTHER WTF YALL WERE BARELY BROS FOR AN HOUR
Tumblr media
2. Gorgeous men and women and they all can fight and murder you with their eyes?!?!?! (There’s more than the below LIKE A LOT MORE)
Tumblr media
3. COMEDY
Example this dumb boy introducing his big name to everyone and then hitting his head
Tumblr media
Example the whole fucking carriage has been exploded to smithereens BUT guess who is literally untouched and still in his bed?? Sleeping beauty Wu Xin
Tumblr media
Example Xiao Se praising how amazing Wu Xin is but then like “We’re his hostages but we’re praising him” wtf
Tumblr media
4. The CGI!!!! And the fighting sequences are really amazing!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And lastly am I the only one thinking about Xue Xian and Xuan Min from Copper Coins!!

This poll might look a little familiar.... Due to a timing mix-up yesterday, I am proud to present the 'Best Non-Sword Weapon' poll take 2: Electric Boogaloo!
This time I've chosen to group the options by weapon with wielders in brackets*. Due to space issues, the media that each of them come from is under the read more, and this is definitely a non-exhaustive list!
*Except Xie Lian, who by virtue of winning the previous poll has been brought straight through to part two!
Thank you to everyone from the NiF discord and the watch party discord (and especially @shadaras) who have been amazing at suggesting characters with non-sword weapons! Couldn't have have done it without you! Also thank you to @thebansacredbanned who looked up the names of various obscure characters for me.
Propaganda, examples, and write-ins absolutely welcome!
Fan Wen Kexing (Word of Honour) Shen Qingqiu (SVSSS) Qing Ming (Yin Yang Master)

(Just taking things from the tags to make it easier for me)
#qi rong decides to revolutionize the world of medicine of ancient china while he waits to be reunited with his beloved son
#and this how how QR accidentally ends up ascending as the God of Medicine (he's not mad about it but he didn't expect that to happen)
#the entire palace is highly suspicious of qi rong because yeah they're glad that he's actually behaving but why is he behaving now?
#qi rong suddenly acts like a well-behaved kid and alarm bells are ringing in the royal family's head because what tf happened?
#qi rong's also dealing with the fact that he's going to have to wait 800 years to see guzi again and he's pretty sad about it
#the current theory is that someone is possessing qi rong but that ended up being disproved by mei nianqing
#qi rong is experiencing child loss but his child hasn't even been born yet which makes it even worse
#qi rong lived in the modern world and now that he's back in ancient china again there's so much things that he's now appalled by
#also it'd be funny if he just spoke only using modern slang only for everyone else to be like 'wtaf is this boy talking about?'
#qi rong being a good dad somehow turns him into a better person (he wants the best for his son and if changing will do that then he will)
#the palace see qi rong with his medical tools and are terrified because to them (people from ancient times) they look like torture tools
#qi rong accidentally becomes a heavenly official and he hates it so much (but he's also super smug about too (at least he doesn't die now))
#qi rong misses the modern world a little bit because at least the clothes didn't have multiple layers (he misses his sweatpants so much)
#qi rong has a degree and he's going to use it to better the world (this is all part of his plan for guzi to be proud to call him dad)
#this was also inspired by another manhwa called 'the divine surgeon'
#qi rong is chanting don't be suspicious in his head while being the most suspicious person alive to the rest of his family
#qi rong accidentally redeems himself because he wants to be the best for his son
Doctor Elise Qi Rong AU
in which shortly after dying in canon (i know that since his ashes weren’t destroyed that he’s probably still alive but please bear with me), qi rong finds himself reincarnated in the modern world and decides that in this life he's going to become someone that guzi would proudly call his father (nevermind the fact that the kid loves him just the way he is), and decides that in order for that to happen, he’s going to become a doctor and save lives and he ends up becoming a super accomplished surgeon with an extremely high success rate.
unfortunately while on his way home from a hospital shift, he ends up getting hit by a truck (you know i had to include truck-kun in this au!) and when he wakes up, he’s in his bedroom back when he was still prince xiao jing of xianle.
the good news is that he can be reunited with guzi again, the bad news is that he’s going to have to wait 800 years before the reunion can happen.
so because he can't really do anything but wait, qi rong decides that he's going to continue his work as a doctor and he ends up accidentally single-handedly revolutionizing ancient china's world of medicine along the way.

My guy out here collecting all the (grand)fathers like he's collecting pokemon lmao
It's interesting and heartwarming to see how Tang San has loosened up around Du Gu Bo and actually acts his age when compared to how serious he was as a child. He was even cheeky towards his teacher, after being with Du Gu Bo. ❤️😭
Reunions, hell yeah!!

In 2016 X-Nine did a cooking livestream in which each member had to cook one dish. Here are some Xiao Zhan-centric highlights, including:
Gu Jiacheng requiring assistance with his dish and then suddenly discovering previously hidden levels of competence when XZ asks him to help, leading to copious mocking and drinking of vinegar
Everyone raves about XZ's cooking.
XZ being soothingly competent and making a great Sichuan Boiled Beef
This is part one. I'll post part two tomorrow.
(Thanks to kikichan86 for her assistance on this very long clip, which is also avaliable in one piece Youtube.)

Do you know the story of the movie "The Fire Ball" being stolen? Wikipedia mentions it briefly but doesn't elaborate
Oh yes! There is something about that!
So what you should know is that Fire Ball is 紅孩兒大話火焰山
Production company: Beijing Children's Art Theater Co., Ltd., Hongguang Co., Ltd. Production Region: Taiwan, China Publisher: Applause Pictures Limited Director: Wang Tong Screenwriter: Ji Weiran Producer: Li Shuihe, Wang Zhongyuan, Zhang Yanping Starring: 阿雅, 瑪莎, 楊貴媚, 澎恰恰 Length: 95 minutes Release date: May 8, 2005 (Mainland China), May 8, 2005 (Taiwan, China) Dialogue language: Mandarin IMDb encoding: tt2321301 Major awards: The 11th Film Huabiao Award for Outstanding Animation Film Award, The 42nd Taiwan Film Golden Horse Awards Best Animated Feature Film Award
This was made in 2005 WITHOUT A DOUBT!
However, there was SOMEONE that re-released it under a different name and SLIGHTLY different coloring 火焰山历险记 released in 2013 not even a DECADE later!
Tumblr media
On the left are the edited cuts while on the right is the original.
"Production" Region: China Distribution company: Mr. Cartoon Film Co., Ltd. [China] Jiangsu Wudu Xiaoxiang Film and Television Culture Development Co., Ltd. [China] "Director": Xiao Huaihai "Screenwriter": Yin Heng Zhang Pingjuan Release date: 2013-07-19 Language: Mandarin Length: 85 minutes Starring: Gu Yueyi
A quote from it's Baidu page:
"The audience found that the animated film "Flame Mountain Adventure" is exactly the same as the animated film "Red Boy's Story of Flame Mountain" which won the Taiwan Golden Horse Award in 2005, but the names of the producers, directors and other main creators have all been changed. After interviews with many parties, it was learned that the film is indeed a remake of the old film, deliberately concealing the truth in the publicity, infringing on the consumer's right to know, and such incidents are not uncommon in the current animation film industry.
The film was edited from 87 minutes to 84 minutes, nothing else. The plot, theme, all original animations, and backgrounds are almost unchanged from the previous version. To be precise, "Flame Mountain Adventure" is just a re-release with a different name."
This was a Chinese company that clearly stole and made slight edits in what I assumed was a cheap and easy cash grab. I would say that maybe it could have worked if it wasn't an award-winning piece of animation that wasn't even released a decade ago.
"During the pre-release promotion of "Flame Mountain Adventure", it was never mentioned that this animation was a modified version of "Red Boy's Big Talk about Flame Mountain", and this important information was not informed to the audience at all. The person in charge explained: "This is the plan of our company's entire project. We are promoting this project in such an order, and we are not saying that it is different." It is obviously a "secondary production", but the original creative team list has been completely changed. The producer changed from "Taiwan Hongguang" to "Wu Du Xiaoxiang"; the original director was Taiwanese director Wang Tong, but now it has become Xiao Huaihai. Mr. Zhang said that he would issue a formal statement to the media to explain these questions. But the producer does not think there is anything wrong with the second release."
It is almost impossible to think about the AUDACITY of some people, especially in the animation industry. From changing the Diretor name, the screenwriter, and the voice actors of this movie and seeing NO issue with releasing it under different names... insane.
Check out their baidu pages but there isn't a lot more info there sadly!

honest thoughts on guzhou | a lonely hero's journey up to episode 10/36 (some vague spoilers ahead):
overall, i'm pleased with this drama, and it's worth the year i waited for it. don't listen to the mydramalist rating if you're considering watching, a nonzero amount of vocal criticism for this seems to be from people who aren't the target audience for this show and have decided to make that other people's problem. the plot is tightly written, with twists i'm enjoying anticipating and decent pacing (that earns honest praise from me on that last one, because bad pacing is one of the things i loathe most in a drama). production and the soundtrack are good. character dynamics are for the most part complex and fascinating, whether they're friendly ones or absolutely wretched. special mention to gu xixing and his attempts to look out for his children both biological and foster, the differences in values between everyone involved are tearing them apart but he's doing his best.
acting, overall, is decent. shoutout to the casting director for zeng shunxi and zhang songwen as the leads, their scenes together have been some of my favourites for sure and they play this antagonistic mentor/student dynamic very well. as far as i can tell based on his upcoming dramas, as well as guzhou, zeng shunxi is trying to leave behind the tianzhen young master roles a la wu xie or fang duobing in lieu of a bit more mature/serious characters, and he's doing great with this one. balancing out gu yizhong's motivations and fears is not an easy role, but there have been some acting moments in this from him that gave me legitimate chills. zhang songwen on the other side is doing a fantastic job as expected, playing zhou zhifei as a ruthless and calculating opponent, but also quite sympathetic. no notes, he's a treat whenever he's onscreen.
my only major problem with this show is that the character of xiao ruotong is frustratingly written, exacerbated by the fact that the other people she interacts with are written well. she's second female lead and in a relationship with gu yizhong at the start of the show, and supposedly these two are 青梅竹马, but we're not really given any reason to root for them as a couple other than that they already are one. yizhong's interactions with zhang haimo make for a far more compelling onscreen dynamic by comparison. and yet after yizhong cuts ties with her for her own safety and his own, ruotong is continually chasing after yizhong to the point that she ruins multiple missions for her undercover unit, unable to separate team objective from emotions. each time, she gets scolded for it, and her unit leader rightfully tries to keep her out of the next active mission given that she's proven to be a liability, yet the plot somehow bends so that she's allowed to keep going out. only to just stand there staring like a startled deer at yizhong in the actual moment. she hasn't been given very much to do otherwise, with little room for character growth, and it's a shame. i know romance is not the focus of a 谋战剧 but unfortunately ruotong has truly been kept rather useless by the plot so far, as both a love interest and in her capacity as a field agent.
however, that's only one specific aspect of the show i have a bone to pick with, and as i said, it's a solid drama overall. i'm deeply entertained and intrigued by everything else it's got going, and i for one will be following it until it finishes.
